Strong Institutions: Foundations For Future Peace

What does a well-built house need to withstand the weather? It needs a sturdy frame. In fact, with a sturdy frame, a house can take the impacts of extreme weather, protecting the inhabitants within. Similarly, strong institutions provide safety and security for the inhabitants of the Earth, protecting them from uncertainties and providing them with peace.

Society is underpinned by various institutions, whether it is the government, justice, educational, religious, social, or others. These institutions are supposed to provide us with security, direction, and guidance. However, sometimes, these institutions have systematic corruption embedded. Like a wooden house infested by termites, the framework is then eaten away at and destroyed until the house crumbles at the merest breath of wind and collapses into chaos.

Darcy held Bree’s eyes. Though Darcy was standing in the dock, he smiled. Bree shuddered.

The judge’s gavel fell. “Not guilty.”

A tear leaked from the corner of her eye as a chill arced up her spine. Darcy’s lips peeled back from his teeth. Bree turned around and limped out of the courtroom.

Bree couldn’t work out why, despite hard evidence, the judge had delivered that verdict. It made no sense. Her ex-partner had crippled her for life after a vicious assault.

Turning the corner of the building, she saw the Judge, Darcy, his lawyer, and the two investigating detectives grinning and chatting to each other. Darcy’s lawyer pulled out his wallet, withdrew cash, and parcelled it out to the judge and the detectives.

What Are Strong Institutions Important?

What Are Strong Institutions?

A strong institution is a well-functioning organisation or system in society that enforces laws, ensures stability, and protects people’s rights. Furthermore, these institutions are accountable, transparent, and adaptable, addressing societal needs while promoting fairness and inclusivity. As a result, they form the foundation of a thriving and harmonious society by encouraging economic growth, social unity, and individual opportunities while respecting fundamental human rights.

Why Are Strong Institutions Important?

Strong institutions are vital for stable and progressive societies. In fact, they ensure safety, enforce laws, and maintain economic stability. Furthermore, these institutions guarantee fair treatment under the law, fostering a thriving environment for businesses and confident investments. They also promote transparent governance, reduce corruption, and utilise public resources for the common good. Additionally, strong institutions ensure equal opportunities, resolve conflicts peacefully, protect human rights, and support social unity, innovation, and education. In essence, they are essential for creating a just and prosperous society.

Climate Change And Strong Institutions

We need strong institutions to tackle climate change effectively. In fact, these institutions create clear rules, encourage cooperation between countries, and ensure everyone follows through on their commitments to reduce pollution. Furthermore, they also help allocate funds for research and green technologies, making it easier to fight climate change. Finally, strong institutions hold everyone accountable and make sure we work together to build a greener future.

Why is it essential that we focus on Developing Strong Institutions?

By fostering strong organisations and systems, we lay the groundwork for a society that is safer, more just, and economically prosperous. Indeed, it is crucial to focus on constructing institutions that are accountable, transparent, and flexible. As a result, this will ensure a future where everyone’s rights are safeguarded, abundant opportunities exist, and our communities flourish.

You, as a person, can support the building and maintaining of strong institutions by holding your organisations, systems, and governments accountable. Moreover, it’s time the majority came together to hold the few who run the systems and govern us to task. Indeed, as human beings with human rights, we have the authority to demand transparency.

How do you do this? Get involved at the political level. You can also advocate for policy change that delivers justice and fairness to all. Furthermore, you can write to your local government representatives. Make yourself known and ensure they hear your choice and your voice. Remember, as part of the public, you are already a stakeholder in the running of your government, even without an official title or position. Finally, you can be an active part of reformation by participating in peaceful activism, such as Greenpeace or even THRIVE.

The footage of the bribe finished playing on the screen of the Supreme Court. The 5 defendants stood behind the bar, glaring at the judge. Darcy turned around to stare at Bree. He wasn’t smiling.

“Guilty,” the judge declared.

Bree remained in the courtroom and watched as the prison guards cuffed Darcy, and he was led from the bar into a side door. She smiled.

The prosecutor came up to Bree and shook her hand. “That was an amazing testimony. Thank you for having the courage to be a witness and share your experience. It must have been terrible for you to relive that. I can’t imagine the suffering you felt when you that the justice institution failed you. In fact, if it wasn’t for people like you, it would be so much harder to stamp out corruption. It’s important for our institutions to remain strong so that everybody can have a peaceful future.”

achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how they link to Strong Institutions

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.

The Logo

THRIVE’s logo, a ciambella chart, outlines two important boundaries for humanity to adhere to. These boundaries are – a social floor, denoting the minimum for an entity’s survival; and an environmental ceiling, where too many resources are taken from the planet. Indeed, strong and stable institutions aim to keep humanity above the social floor, ensuring an entity receives the peace it needs for a fulfilling life.

THRIVE believes humanity can do better with the knowledge currently available to us. In fact, we have all the resources we need to create strong institutions that will enable a peaceful future for all of humanity. Institutions that are sound, will create a resilient society that can withstand disasters.

I love writing. When I write I get lost for hours. Writing is, in essence, how I found myself. Something else which I love is volunteering. I volunteer in various roles for several organisations. With THRIVE I can do the two things I enjoy the most. Helping THRIVE to become a sustainable superpower blanketing the globe with wisdom and knowledge is one of my favourite gigs.
